The manaia is a complex figure, often depicted in profile with its head shaped like a bird, large eye, and body with flowing curves. It blends human and animal characteristics, representing the interconnectedness of different life forms and their roles in the world. The tail of a fish representing Tangaroa the sea god.   The design of the Manaia varies between different carvers and iwi (tribes), giving each piece a unique aesthetic and spiritual identity.

Spiritual Guardian: The Manaia is commonly seen as a protective figure, guarding against evil spirits and negative influences. It is believed to be a spiritual entity that looks after both the physical and spiritual wellbeing of the wearer. 
Balance Between Realms: The Manaia is often described as the "guardian between realms," representing the balance between earth, sea, and sky. This symbolism reflects its composite form—part bird (sky), part human (earth), and part fish (sea). The manaia is seen as a spiritual intermediary, connecting the wearer to the natural world and the spiritual realm, symbolizing the harmonious relationship between them.
Protection and Strength: The Manaia offers protection and strength to the person wearing it. Its role as a guardian makes it a powerful amulet for safeguarding against physical dangers and negative spiritual influences. It is often passed down through generations, carrying the mana (spiritual energy) of those who previously owned it.
Connection to Ancestors: The Manaia, particularly when carved from Pounamu, is also linked to one's ancestors (tipuna). In Māori culture, Pounamu is seen as a taonga (treasure) with spiritual significance, and when carved into a Manaia, it further represents the ancestral protection and guidance passed down through the generations.
Symbol of Harmony: The Manaia’s composite form represents harmony between opposing forces—life and death, earth and sky, physical and spiritual. It serves as a reminder to maintain balance and equilibrium in life, recognizing the duality of existence and the need for harmony within oneself and the environment.
Mana (Spiritual Power): The Manaia holds Mana, or spiritual power. Wearing it enhances the wearer's personal Mana, reflecting their spiritual strength, integrity, and connection to Māori culture.
